In a laboratory hidden in a lesser-visited section of the sciences hall, a universe was being created. The purpose of the project was to examine what happened with a population of rats when the typical environmental causes of mortality were minimized; nearly everything that the creatures would ever need were provided in this specially-designed space where there were no predators and no inclement weather. The only thing lacking was space, but that danger would not come for some time yet. The investigators overseeing the project decided to start with a small starter population consisting of the best and healthiest rats.
The rats had no idea of any of this, of course. For all they knew, this was heaven, and their guardian angels were always there, watching over them and protecting them from the evils of the world. The new settlers darted all over this exciting new world, eager to discover everything it had to offer. Everywhere they looked, they saw goodies: corn cobs, thin paper strips, and even clean water. A couple even ran up the tunnels lining the walls of the space that led to the rats' nesting boxes. Another two busied themselves with the walls themselves, sniffing here and there at corners and flat planes. This was a wonderful place to call "home."
However, as with all good things, this utopia would soon come to an end...
