* Comments: So much for my “well-adjusted” scumdar… Day 1 started with surprisingly many leads to follow, especially [[StefanB]] ([[Vanilla]]) who had a tough time talking himself out of controversial statements and [L] ([[Vanilla]]) looking suspicious for false statements and strange allegations. [L] became the mislynch Day 1 due to [[C-Worl]]’s hammer ([[Goon]]) that most thought was too early. Hence he became the main suspect during Day 2 and in fact he bowed to the pressure by hammering himself since he couldn’t talk himself clean. With Day 3 coming, things became interesting due to a general lack of hard suspicions; [[Setael]] ([[Vanilla]]) tried hard to push a scum team consisting of [[Zdenek]] ([[Mafia Roleblocker]]) and me but I managed to defend well enough. So most of the players looked at [[tarsonisocelot]] ([[Vanilla]]), [[Me=Weird]] ([[Vanilla]]) or the [[mastin2]]/[[chkflip]]/[[redtail896]]/[[Surprise_Carcinogen]] slot ([[Bodyguard]])… until the mastin2 and Zdenek claimed and counter-claimed Bodyguard. It was a close election but Zdenek finally had to go. Of course mastin2 was the obvious Night 3 kill choice but with the Mafia Roleblocker gone now [[Pine]] ([[Cop]]) could finally investigate someone: he brought forward the scum result on the thought-quite-townie [[imaginality]] ([[Goon]]) and so Day 4 ended pretty quickly. If we hadn’t had so many replacements (eleven), the game would have been totally different.
* Lessons learned: Replacements can change the game outcome enormously. Don’t focus too much on certain players, always keep your eyes peeled on everyone. Always re-evaluate statements of killed townies, especially replacements.

Uncle Pain is the cheesy nickname of a novice Mafia player. I’ve been a scummer since the beginning of 2008.

I came to MafiaScum by accident: xkcd is not only is a webcomic, but the author also has a blog there. In one post, he asked his readers to tell him games that could be played with only voice and memory. One of them, DrewMG, mentioned Mafia and shortly explained it. And then Sam came along and linked to mafiascum.net – and this is when I signed up and joined my first game…

• Comments: My first game and I have a power role... I could have thought of better starts. Day 1 was interesting for me, getting some FoS’es and votes, so it all looked like I didn’t give away my role. The Day 1 lynch was the obligatory mislynch, but well, Wisp (Townie) really didn’t do so well. I realized that Rosso Carne (Cop), who played in an aggressive and short-worded way (and thus got my scumdar attention), was against the lynch, so my Night 1 choice was on him, hoping he could be the NK target... but it wasn’t him and I was roleblocked anyway, as it turned out later. Since this was Pie E7, this meant we were in five-player LYLO now. This was when I used probability math for the first time, BTW. Rosso Carne quickly came up with some strange plan, but no one understood or followed it, and soon he dropped out anyway. He was replaced by Miztef who soon claimed cop and gave his Night 1 result on WingsOWisdom (Townie). This breathed a new wind into the game: While Miztef had his eye (and vote) on Iammars (Goon), I had my HoS at Miztef, but in a drastic turnaround I voted Iammars due to his inactivity and my gut feeling – lucky gut feeling, that is. Funnily, it was his scumbuddy angelmouse (Mafia Roleblocker) that bussed and hammered him. My Night 2 choice was plainly stupid: I protected Miztef although it was obvious that he would be blocked rather than NK’ed. The confirmed townie WingsOWisdom was a much better choice to NK, but I didn’t realize this... so it was Miztef, angelmouse and me in the endgame. angelmouse and I immediately voted and attacked each other, making Miztef’s voting choice very hard, but he did the right thing and voted angelmouse. Hooray, first game won!
• Lessons learned: Too many to mention.

• Game outcome: Mafia endgamed after Day 3 → loss
• Fate: dropped out during Day 2 due to personal circumstances, also Nightkilled on Night 2
• Comments: I started this game in spite of having a lot to do for study. It began with surprisingly many posts, but was quickly dominated by Ectomancer (Goon) directing the votes to Xtoxm (Vanilla), who couldn’t do much to prevent the mislynch. Night 1 got a newbie lynched, Walnut (Townie). On Day 2, the town was mainly focusing on Jelly (Townie) because of her unreasonable Day 1 hammer vote. This is when I dropped out of the game... town mislynched her and then the NK came upon me, what a convenient way to not have to replace me :) So the game got into Day 3 LYLO. UnofficialRulerOfEveryone (Cop) claimed and gave his scummy result on Ectomancer, but in the subsequent argument with him, UnofficialRulerOfEveryone couldn’t convince the others of his claim, which soon lead to his own lynch. Mafia win, without me.
• Lessons learned: Don’t apply to a game if you don’t have time.

• Role: Vanilla
• Fate: survived
• Game outcome: Town win after Day 2 → victory
• Comments: What a fast one! It began with random suspicions and soon emerged into strange reasonings from Wirodeu (Goon). The more he posted, the scummier he looked and the more votes he accumulated... until his buddy super random dude (Goon) decided to hammer him. And then Wirodeu did the biggest mistake scum can do: after being lynched, he linked himself to super random dude by calling him a “traitor”. What a hyperobvious tell and yet I only HoS’ed super random dude on Day 2. But Crazy (Cop) was clever enough to investigate him, so he claimed and told us his scummy result. Quicklynch, perfect town win, yay!
• Lessons learned: Don’t underestimate links. (after the game Vel-Rahn Koon showed us important linking clues that I dismissed as random fluff but turned out to be pretty telling)

• Entry: replacement for arch2ngel during Day 2

• Comments: I sincerely hope that I’ll never have such a exhausting game again: four months (for me), 750+ posts (including CorvuusAmazing Wall o' Text posts), twelve replacements in total, often low activity. And still the game was extremely interesting and balanced.
It all began with a Day 1 full of newbieness, flaking, No Lynch votes and finally the usual mislynch. Funnily, the NK was on Sudo_Nym (Vanilla) who was totally inactive… I wonder what the Mafia thought of this choice. On Day 2, Mr_Adams (Goon) quickly slipped, but Thunder (Vanilla) and Corvuus (Goon) were busy with each other in a very long ad hominem argument full of Amazing Wall o'Text. This was about the time when I replaced into the game. Things got calmer eventually and everyone realized that Mr_Adams was the correct lynch – finally. PsychoSniper (Doctor), who has quickly become the most valuable town player during the game, was NK’ed in the following Night and so we had to find the second scum with five players. This is when Empking (Vanilla) replaced in and posted some strange stuff. The fact that he was actually evading question made me hammer him on Day 3. Well, and then it became quiet: although it was three players left, only Corvuus and I were active and our mod had a hard time getting replacements willing to join a Day-4-page-28-huge-posts game. We almost agreed on just lynching the flaking Stef (Vanilla) to get over with the game… but then Rhinox replaced in and totally changed the whole situation: we were suddenly three active players, each one suspecting the others. At first Rhinox concentrated on me and basically destroyed my argumentations; when he took a look at Corvuus, Corvuus attacked him, which finally led to both of them voting each other. I had the hard choice to tell who of them was scummier and I was so unsure… until I realized how much Corvuus was buddying me up all the time since friggin' Day 2! I voted him, and I voted well.
• Lessons learned: Never trust anyone, and be suspicious of anyone else who trusts you. Large posts are a null tell. Rishi is a patient, committed mod, which is very valuable in games like these.

Newbie 722 - Perfectly Ordinary Mafia

• Game outcome: Town win after Day 3 → victory
• Comments: Heh, I joined this game because of my love for Rishi as a mod. :) A funny situation to replace in, some oddities right from the start but no clear suspicions. At least eldarad (Vanilla) was a steady rock of townieness for the whole game. For me it was basically about Destrox (Vanilla), who voted very conveniently on the insensible Day 1 bandwagon, and freeko (Goon) who attacked Gregory (Vanilla) with highly vague and/or flawed reasons. When Spolium replaced Destrox, the discussion took a turn: Spolium and I were arguing with each other, to the point that Spolium almost got to L-1… then freeko was replaced by tubby216 and things started to look different again. tubby216 couldn’t rescue himself from the allegations mainly made by Spolium and I concurred by hammering him. But Day 3 became more complicated, Spolium going for me again and other suspicions only arising as we began to re-read an analyse the past play. fuzzylightning (Mafia Roleblocker) finally got the votes for his dodgy style and odd reasoning. I think this game was nothing special but a good exercise to gain experience in argumentation and defence.
Gotta love Spolium for his Day 3 statement: “If UP isn't scum I will EAT MY HAT.” :D
• Lessons learned: none really

• Role: Mafia Roleblocker
• Fate: survived
• Game outcome: Mafia endgamed after Day 2 → victory
• Comments: Joined the game because Spolium advertised it in my previous game. And I swear he wanted to see how I play scum. Well, my first one as scum, so let’s see…
Quite a short game. AndyTony (Cop) quickly found ways to look scummy, Empking (Vanilla) played his usual controversial style and went hard for AndyTony. I stepped in and built a small case but AndyTony saw through it – fortunately the bandwagon was already rolling well, thanks to stubborn Empking and Clu (Deputy)… until AndyTony decided that he’s had enough of the attacks and hammered himself. I felt something strange between thankfulness and pity. Day 2 was a lot more sensible, my buddy replacement PhilyEc (Goon) and Empking managed to blacken fuzzylightning (Vanilla) properly despite my obvious Day 1 mistakes. I didn’t even have to participate in these votes since Empking and Clu already did that. Hammer by PhilyEc, perfect mafia win!
• Lessons learned: playing scum isn’t as hard as I thought, just be careful with cases and don’t insist on them too much. Empking is a strange player.

• Comments: A very good re-entry into Mafia Scum after almost two years of absence. After reading the thread, I was baffled due to three reasons. First, the Day 1 bandwagon on Hazard with a Glove (Vanilla): not only because it was started by Kcdaspot (Mafia Roleblocker) for an arguable reason but also how conveniently dysorder (Vanilla) and inspiratieloos (Vanilla) jumped on it. Second, the Night 1 nightkill was on someone who just replaced in… and third, let’s not forget the funny play of Les Guilelesser (Vanilla) who seemed to kind of misunderstand the game and thus managed to change his looks from townie to scummy to VI within only few days. All in all a very odd game to replace in… but I had my vote on Kcdaspot firmly early on. As soon as Les Guilelesser and PeRrY-_- (Vanilla) had been replaced by the experienced players GMan and Stefunny respectively, Kcdaspot came under serious pressure until Mist7676 (Goon) hammered him – after asking town for permission. This and some other strange behaviour led to her lynch on Day 3. It was my easiest hammer so far, I was quite confident and town got a good victory.
• Lessons learned: My scumdar seems to be well-adjusted, at least in newbie games. Stop using maths unless you really know what you’re talking about.
