Newbie 1228: Happy Anniversary! (modded by Haylen)
I was the Mafia Rolecop. This game was pretty interesting in that it was ridiculously short. The entire game was only 13 pages long. My scumbuddy, frog, got into a ridiculously wallish argument with a townie on Day 1, and came out on the better end of that quarrel, looking clean and sitting pretty. I threw a ton of suspicion on the IC of the game, Gen_Wolf, and we were able to get him lynched without too much effort.
Most of the way through Day 1, SaintKerrigan replaced in for a flaker, and immediately I knew the game had become personal. When I had nailed him as scum back in Mini 1296 and my team had been far too incompetent to lynch him, I promised him that I would kill him back some day. Instead, I paid him the same honor/insult of having his very own teammates mislynch him. Fortunately for us, that wasn't too hard either because he'd laid a terrible hammer on the IC at the end of Day 1, and all that remained to do was stoke the fires and make sure the suspicion remained generally high for his slot, and the rest we left up to the townies.
I had to marvel at frog's play in this game. As a raw newbie, he handled himself admirably and I can't say as I could have done much better my first time on site (admittedly, I did have a pretty good first few games, but this game by frog was exemplary in comparison). All seemed to be going swimmingly, and our Night 1 kill seemed to cause much confusion, as it was someone who was under quite a bit of suspicion thus far. Instead of leaving him alive though, we decided to kill him because we thought he was a power role—he had seemed quite interested in going to the night phase after Day 1's lynch. Alas, we were wrong, but thanks to my Rolecop investigation, we had narrowed the possible power role slots down to five out of the nine starting slots.
Day 2 we managed to get a mislynch as well, but Night 2 we weren't so lucky. Or were we? As it turns out, we most certainly were. I initially suggested that we should kill ArcaneSaint, because I suspected him of being a power role; but instead of listening to the more experienced player and being led around like a sheep, frog cut in and suggested that we kill Ziggler instead, for a number of reasons. I decided that it was important that frog got to make decisions as much as I did; after all, Newbie games are a learning experience, and I wanted his first game on site (or second; I don't remember if it was his first, but he wasn't an SE yet for sure) to be a good and memorable one. As it turned out, when Dawn on Day 3 arose, Ziggler was the Doctor! Fantastic.
We had luckily gone through a little bit of talking about how the game would play out if one of us was to be investigated by a Cop, and as it turns out, I was indeed investigated—and by none other than ArcaneSaint. Ouch! So I was lynched on Day 3, and for a while I wished that we'd killed him instead. But what we learned in post-game was that frog had made the right choice. The protection target that Ziggler had chosen that night was ArcaneSaint, so if we'd tried to kill him, not only would we have been a kill behind, but we'd have been a man down, there would have been a claimed Cop, and we still wouldn't have known who the Doctor was, and he could have protected the Cop every night from then on with near-impunity! The game would have been almost surely over if we had gone that route—and I would have, had frog not stepped in and made his thoughts known in a clear and concise manner. And so thank you frog; it's clearly your fault we won this game.
Anyway, the next day was now Day 4. After another successful kill, this time on ArcaneSaint, the Cop, frog headed once again into MyLo, this time without a wingman. And his play was nearly perfect, and of course with play that good, he walked away with a smile on his face, snagging the win for both of us, and cementing a memorable early victory at the beginning of what is hopefully a sparkling career playing Mafia.
