Reliabilities

Variations on Cop or Doctor roles are called reliabilities. Non-reliable roles are not self-aware of their reliability.

Cop Reliabilities

Despite the name, multiple roles can have these reliabilities. The Cop is by far the most common investigative role to be non-reliable. Reliability/role combinations that have not been theorised on the forums have been devised by BwBurke and are in italics. The most common reliabilities are Inverse, Cynical and Naive.

In all cases below, the Watcher and Voyeur do not receive their own names as results. Note that the Miller and Godfather modifiers may or may not override cop reliability.

Reliable

A reliable investigative role receives normal results.

  • A reliable Cop receives an innocent result for Town members, and a guilty result for Mafia members.
  • A reliable Role Cop receives the name of the target's role, but not their alignment.
  • A reliable Tracker learns the name(s) of all people targeted by their target.
  • A reliable Follower learns what action(s) their target performed.
  • A reliable Watcher learns the name(s) of all people who targeted their target.
  • A reliable Voyeur learns what actions were performed on their target.
  • A reliable Checker gets a result if their action succeeds and No Result if their action fails.

Formerly known as Sane.

Inverse

An inverse investigative role receives the opposite result of a reliable role.

  • An inverse Cop receives a guilty result for Town members, and an innocent result for Mafia members.
  • An inverse Role Cop receives a power role as a result for Vanilla roles, and a Vanilla role as a result for power roles.
  • An inverse Tracker receives the results of a reliable Watcher, and vice versa.
  • An inverse Follower receives the results of a reliable Voyeur, and vice versa.
  • An inverse Checker gets No Result if their action succeeds and a result if their action fails.

Formerly known as Insane.

Cynical

A cynical investigative role always receives a guilty result.

  • A cynical Cop receives a guilty result no matter who they target.
  • A cynical Role Cop receives a power role considered "scummy" (mod's discretion) as a result.
  • A cynical Tracker receives the name of the scum kill's target as a result.
  • A cynical Follower receives the "kill" action as a result.
  • A cynical Watcher targeting a nightkill target receives a random name as a result. Otherwise, they receive a blank result.
  • A cynical Voyeur targeting a nightkill target receives the "kill" action as a result. Otherwise, they receive a blank result.
  • A cynical Checker receives No Result no matter what happens.

Naive

A naive investigative role always receives an innocent result.

  • A naive Cop receives an innocent result no matter who they target.
  • A naive Role Cop receives Vanilla as a result.
  • A naive Tracker, Follower, Watcher, or Voyeur receives a blank result.
  • A naive Checker receives a result no matter what happens.

Formerly known as Naive.

Random

A random investigative role receives a random result -- normally the result a reliable investigation would receive from a randomly chosen living person. The randomly chosen person, if the mod chooses to go this route, cannot be the person doing the investigation in the first place.

Not to be confused with Randomized.

Unreliable

An unreliable investigative role has a 50% chance to act as a Reliable role, otherwise it will act as an Inverse role. For binary investigative roles, this is not meaningfully different from Random.

Percentage

A percentage modifier can be used as a reliability, if a Naive result is received when the ability fails. This is generally considered bastard.

Non-Investigative Reliabilities

A more generalized version of the Doctor reliabilities. These can apply to any non-investigative role (for investigative roles, use Cop reliabilities).

A reliable non-investigative role has the expected effect. For example, a Reliable Roleblocker prevents someone from acting.
An inverse non-investigative role has the opposite effect. For example, an Inverse Roleblocker makes someone immune to roleblocking.
A cynical non-investigative role has an excessive effect. For example, a Cynical Roleblocker prevents someone from acting and or being acted upon.
A naive non-investigative role has no effect. For example, a Naive Roleblocker only visits their target.
A random non-investigative role is treated as having a random reliability (all are equally likely). For example, a Random Roleblocker can randomly act as Reliable, Inverse, Cynical, or Naive.
An unreliable non-investigative role has a 50% chance to act as a Reliable role, otherwise it will act as an Inverse role. For example, an Unreliable Roleblocker may either prevent someone from acting or make them immune to roleblocking.
