Each power role in a Game of Mafia has additional abilities when compared to a Vanilla Townie. These abilities may be beneficial, disadvantaging or wholly neutral. The MafiaWiki has sorted these roles into groups which share similarities with one another:
- Alignment-changing roles and modifiers, which change a player's faction or win condition
- Communicative roles and modifiers, which allow players to communicate privately
- Deceptive roles and modifiers, which produce false or misleading results when investigated
- Investigative roles and modifiers, whose only or primary function is to gain information
- Killing roles and modifiers, which eliminate players
- Linked roles and modifiers, which refer to another role or player
- Manipulative roles and modifiers, which alter the targeting or usage of actions
- Negative utility roles and modifiers, which are normally detrimental to their owner
- Protective roles and modifiers, which give immunities to, e.g., kills
- Unpowered roles and modifiers, which have no effect or no known/controllable effect
- Voting roles and modifiers, which alter the meaning/legality of votes and/or the way the lynch is decided
