History
First Era (August-September 2009)
The Song Contest was started by ShadowLurker as an alternative to mith's Song Tournament. The first one ran in 2009 from August 6th-August 18th. 18 votes were cast, with 16 people entering. Final results were announced on August 19th, with The Fonz's Germany crowned as the winner with 118 points.
Song Contest 2 began on August 26th, and is to date the first and only contest to feature a theme (One Hit Wonders). Voting ran from September 2nd-9th. This time, 20 people participated, although once again only 18 votes were cast. Final results were announced shortly after midnight on September 13th. yabbaguy's Sri Lanka won by 2 points over ortolan's Australia.
Second Era (October-December 2009)
After Song Contest 2, ShadowLurker handed over the reigns of the contest to Porochaz. Song Contest 3 began accepting entries on October 16th, and voting on the 15 entries ran from October 21st-29th. The results from the 14 votes cast were announced from November 2nd-7th, with pickemgenius' Kazakhstan coming in victorious with 95 points.
Song Contest 4 began accepting entries on November 8th, and voting began on November 15th. This contest was notable for producing the lowest number of entrants (12) and the lowest number of votes (11) to date. Voting ended on November 20th, and Porochaz's busy schedule caused results to be announced over a 19 day period from November 26th-December 14th, with Porochaz's England beating out JDodge's France by 2 points.
Third Era (December 2009-January 2010)
After Song Contest 4, Porochaz announced that he would be unable to run another contest until after the new year. JDodge took over on a temporary basis for Song Contest 5 only. Song Contest 5 accepted entries on December 15th-24th. 19 entries were submitted, with 10 of those coming in a 17 hour period before the entry deadline. Voting ran until January 1st. Issues with JDodge's main computer caused results to be strung out across a 5 day period, with the final standings announced on January 6th. zu_Faul's Cambodia won with 95 points.
Although he was able to return as host, Porochaz agreed to fully hand over the reigns to JDodge, with the exception of Song Contest 7. Song Contest 6 accepted entries from January 6th-10th. For the first time, the contest hit capacity, with a total of 24 entries submitted. Voting ran until January 19th, with results announced between January 21st-22nd. Scotland was the winner with 93 points, making Porochaz the first and to date only two-time winner of the contest.
Fourth Era (January 2010-Present)
At the end of Song Contest 6, an agreement was reached between Porochaz and JDodge to split hosting duties between the two of them; JDodge would process entries, make graphics, and post results, while Porochaz would handle all the behind-the-scenes clerical work. With the new agreement in place, Song Contest 7 accepted entries from January 23rd-30th, with the number of entrants down slightly to 23. Voting lasted until February 6th, with results announced on February 9th. LlamaFluff's South Africa won the contest with a record 134 points.
Song Contest 8 began accepting entries on February 10th, with the entry period closing on February 17th. Voting on the 26 entries is currently in progress and will run until February 24th at 10 PM EST.
