A Developer is a player who gains a new passive role with every Night.

Standard version

At the start of each Night, a Developer gains a new passive role (and learns what their new role is). These roles stack; the Developer continues to be a Developer, and continues to gain more passive roles without losing their previous roles. The list of roles gained is not known to the Developer at the start of the setup, but will have been chosen by the moderator in advance (either randomly or intentionally).

Variations

Occasionally, this role also allows for actively usable night or day actions as well as or instead of passive roles. This is effectively a Jack-of-all-trades who is not self-aware.

Sometimes, actions do not stack. This is strictly less powerful than the regular role, and players should have a choice whether they want to switch the modifier for another. This can sometimes be X-Shot.

Use & Balance

Hiding the details of a role until later in the game provides a sense of mystery. You should know what roles the Developer will gain in advance, and balance around the power of those roles; randomizing during the game may well effectively randomize the results of the setup, which is normally looked down upon. Note that some roles are more useful earlier or later in the game, so you can fine-tune the balance of the role by changing the order in which the powers are assigned.

Play Advice

As a Developer, you want to stay alive as long as possible, especially if your version includes night actions. Bear in mind that you may end up with negative utility roles.

Sample Role PMs

The standardized Role PM for "Developer" describes the passive ability as follows:

  • As an unmodified passive ability: Whenever Nights start, you will gain a new passive ability. (edit)
  • As a passive ability with a modifier: Whenever the nth Night starts OR Nights start on day n, you will gain a new passive ability. (edit)
