Setups
Duel Mafia is an Open Setup which utilizes a different voting mechanism than the typical "majority to eliminate".
4:8 Nightless Vanilla 3:3:6 Nightless Two-Scum Group
Procedure
Duel Mafia is currently run in Nightless form, but a regular setup is conceptually possible.
Rather than allowing a player to vote freely as in a typical game, challenges must be made in duel mafia. Once a player challenges his opponent, all other players will vote to eliminate either the challenger or his opponent. The loser will be eliminated, and the cycle continues again. Commonly all players are forced to vote, which allows for more opportunities to analyze voting patterns.
Variations
In Deadlined Duel Mafia, automatic deadlines are placed to encourage quick posting and to prevent the town from completely controlling the duelling process. A deadline to challenge is the time by when a duel must be announced. A second deadline is placed to determine by when all votes must be placed.
The werewolf game featured in the film cry_wolf is a form of Duel Mafia with one wolf versus many sheep.
Partner dueling has also been tested as Legends of the Hidden Temple Mafia on the Something Awful forums. The setup was six groups of two Masons (in MafiaScum terms, they would be called Neighbors), with four scum randomly scattered among eight vanilla townies. Teams could challenge other teams, and anyone on either team was able to be voted for. Since partners did not know whether their teammates were aligned with the town or scum, the game was very complex and interesting.
