A Fruit Vendor is a role that may hand out fruit to a player at night. The player they choose is informed that they received a piece of fruit.
Normal version
A Fruit Vendor will hand out a piece of fruit to a player at night. The player that they target is informed that they received a piece of fruit (but not who sent it to them). The fruit has no effect, other than informing the recipient that it exists.
Variations
Essentially, any role that gives a useless item is functionally a Fruit Vendor (a role that gives useful items is an Inventor). Like the Inventor, some variants of the Fruit Vendor may have a selection of items they may give their target.
Announcing is the modifier version of Fruit Vendor, causing any role to let the recipient know that the role targeted them (but not who used it).
Use & Balance
A Fruit Vendor is an evolution of the Visitor role: it does nothing, but by existing, it has power as a Named Townie. Both the Follower and a Fruit Vendor are a step up: they can each be confirmed to be doing something by roles that can see actions happen, or in the case of the Fruit Vendor, their target may be able to corroborate their action as well.
Fruit Vendor is an often modified role due to its peculiar game influence. A Loud Fruit Vendor will not only give fruit to their target, but let them know that they were one of the players to target them that night. A Loyal Fruit Vendor is commonly seen as a sort of backwards investigative role.
As a notably low-power role, a Fruit Vendor may find a welcome spot in most setups. In Theme games, it may be combined with other roles that don't fully realize themselves on the night they perform their action, such as an Inventor or Poisoner.
Play Advice
As Town, it's more useful to give fruit to people you believe are also Town; this makes it more likely that the recipient will corroborate your action, and denies information to the scum that they might be able to use for setup speculation.
In some setups, or in a Normal Game (where players are never Multitasking by default), fruit vending can be considered proof that you did not perform the factional nightkill. A Mafia Fruit Vendor may thus want to give fruit to a Watcher or Tracker who is being left alive that night, or to claim that they targeted a dead player with their fruit-vend (both to explain the missing fruit and to explain away any incriminating action investigations, although this tactic is somewhat subject to WIFOM).
Sample Role PMs
The standardized Role PM for "Fruit Vendor" describes the action as follows:
- As a targeted action:
that player will be told they received fruit (but not who sent it).
(edit)
Example (simplest form)
Welcome to game! You are a Town Fruit Vendor.
You have the following active ability:
- Each Night, you may target a player. Assuming no interference with your action, that player will be told they received fruit (but not who sent it).
You win if all threats to the town are eliminated and at least one town-aligned player is alive.
Confirm by replying to this PM with a summary of your role.
Example (with modifiers)
Welcome to game! You are a Town 1-shot Loud Fruit Vendor.
You have the following active ability:
- Once in the game at Night, you may target a player. Assuming no interference with your action, that player will be told they received fruit (but not who sent it). Your target will learn that you targeted them (but not what action you targeted them with).
You win if all threats to the town are eliminated and at least one town-aligned player is alive.
Confirm by replying to this PM with a summary of your role.
