Game Summary
Traveling Groups
At the start of the game, players were separated into three groups of six: the Northerners, Westermen and Southrons. These groups lasted only through the first challenge before being shuffled.
Challenge 1: Three members of each group competed in a relay race where each member had to solve a different puzzle. The Southrons team, consisting of Daenerys, Viserys and Davos, won individual immunity at their first tribal councils to take place in newly shuffled tribes: the Windblown, Stormcrows and Golden Company.
First Tribes
Challenge 2: The three tribes used clues to solve a series of broken URLs and retrieve images, then had to list what was found in the images to secure immunity for their tribes. Stormcrows and Golden Company won immunity, sending Windblown to the game's first Tribal Council.
Council 1: Theon and Tyrion became targets due to weaker social connections and challenge performances, and did not stick together as a traveling group pair. Though he at first appeared to be the target, Tyrion was able to persuade two tribemates to vote for Theon with him. In the end, Sansa changed her vote to stay in the majority, sending Theon home 4-2.
Challenge 3: The tribes played a strategy game that required them to choose an army to battle against the other tribes' strategies. A last minute strategy change by the Stormcrows won the challenge for them, with Windblown placing second. Golden Company headed to Tribal Council.
Council 2: Brienne didn't make strong enough social connections and was eliminated unanimously.
Challenge 4: The tribes competed in a word search race. Stormcrows and Golden Company came out on top again, with Windblown finishing well behind both.
Council 3: Arya was voted out unanimously after allowing her connections to fade, being seen as quiet and hard to work with.
Tournament
Everyone was brought together to compete in several reward challenges. Everyone was allowed to communicate with each other during this phase, and no one would be eliminated.
Challenge 5: The players engaged in a number-guessing game. The four players who guessed the best would gain the privilege of purchasing vote nullifiers ("shields") or vote revealers. Oberyn, Gilly, Catelyn and Jon won rewards, with Oberyn receiving several other reward options for performing the best. Most of the players opted for shields.
Challenge 6: The players had to identify scrambled images. The best performers would win the ability to choose their part in challenge 7, and also their tribe, last. Sansa was the top dog.
New Tribes
Through a drafting process, the players chose their own new tribes: Seagard, Ashemark and Runestone.
Challenge 7: Challengers faced off in five different competitions, with each tribe sending one representative to each category. Runestone came out on top, with the other tribes tying and both going to Tribal Council.
Council 4: At Seagard, connections between groups that had all been on tribes together already left Bronn the odd man out. He was unable to overcome his tribemates having largely decided to eliminate him from the outset, and all the votes fell against him.
Council 5: At Ashemark, two opposing pairs left Catelyn squarely in the middle, with both sides trying to court her. Viserys and Daenerys, holding to the bond they formed on Southrons, targeted Sansa as a threat with whom they hadn't spent much time. Sansa and Eddard, having been aligned from Northerners, went after Viserys. In the end, Catelyn aligned with the Targaryens, and Sansa was eliminated 3-2.
Challenge 8: Competitors had to identify songs that composed a musical mashup. Runestone was the only tribe to make a mistake, and were sent to Tribal Council.
Council 6: The members of Runestone, having stacked their tribe with strong players, were at an impasse. Jaqen and Asha, allies who had stayed together from the beginning, and Jon and Shae, close allies from Golden Company, targeted each other, leaving Gilly, with one close ally on each side, as the swing vote. After emotional appeals from both sides, Gilly trusted Asha the least, sending her home 3-2 over Shae.
Tribe Swap
Competitors selected two tribes of six under the impression that they were choosing players to compete in the next challenge. The new tribes were Queensguard and Margaery's Sworn Swords.
Challenge 9: The new tribes played Password, which involves players giving one another clues to help guess a secret word. The Queensguard came out on top, sending the Sworn Swords to what would be the sole Tribal Council of this game phase.
Council 7: The newly formed Sworn Swords contained a great number of pre-existing relationships, with a majority of the tribe made up of former Stormcrows. Daenerys had connected strongly with several of them, while Shae's allies were largely on the other tribe. Knowing that she had little hope for survival, Shae gave up and was sent home.
Merge
The surviving 11 players were all brought together to form Balerion's Flames.
Challenge 10: Competitors battled it out for individual immunity in a modified word search and crossword puzzle. Tyrion won immunity.
Council 8: In the first merge tribal council, Viserys tried to rally votes against Stannis, who was percieved as a threat, but the rest of the tribe wasn't ready to make a big move yet. Stannis pushed back against Viserys, and the latter found that his allies just didn't feel as strongly about him as he did about them. Viserys was eliminated by a wide margin, with close ally Oberyn left out of the loop.
Challenge 11: The survivors competed in a game of diplomacy, communication and guessing. Several players declared their strategies in public, leading to other players choosing to avoid knocking them out so as to not appear to be against them. These strategies were ultimately the most successful, and Oberyn won immunity.
Council 9: Stannis, Davos and Tyrion, having all stayed together for much of the game, were perceived as a unit with Stannis at its head, a perception only reinforced by his leadership during the Viserys vote. Stannis changed his target between Eddard and Catelyn, ultimately choosing Catelyn but turning off both in the process. The Windblown's prospective allies in Jon, Eddard and Oberyn ultimately felt their best move was to take out Stannis, and so he left 7-3.
Challenge 12: Players raced to solve a series of translation puzzles using a key. Jaqen came out on top and was immune.
Council 10: In the wake of Stannis' departure, Davos burned bridges while Tyrion made nice. The same group from the previous vote stuck together to eliminate Davos.
Challenge 13: Players were asked to match the replies of eliminated players to several questions. With his closest allies eliminated, Tyrion knew he was in danger and was able to secure his safety with an immunity win.
Council 11: Tyrion and Oberyn had been waiting for the moment to strike and decided now was the time. They used their relationships with Jon and Eddard to initiate a vote against Jaqen, feeling that he was untrustworthy. Gilly, Daenerys, Jaqen and Catelyn targeted Eddard, with Oberyn promising to vote with them as well. However, Gilly and Jon were secretly aligned, planning to alternate eliminating players from each side. Jon leaked the true plan to Gilly. With the votes equal on both sides, Gilly kept her shields in her pocket rather than break Jon's trust, while a shield was played on the other side to send Jaqen home 4-3.
Challenge 14: This challenge was a series of rebus puzzles. Tyrion solved the most and won immunity, spoiling the opposing alliance's hopes of eliminating him.
Council 12: Knowing that Jon had wanted to eliminate him this round due to some aggressive pushing by the former, Tyrion planned to take him out instead and get Catelyn to join his side. Catelyn decided to play both sides, and Tyrion was able to convince Catelyn to give her shield to him and start working with him. Lacking much of a connection with Jon, Catelyn decided to vote against him along with Tyrion, Oberyn and Eddard. A shield from Jon made the vote 3-3, while Gilly felt that playing a shield to save him was too risky. On the revote, everyone but Gilly voted against Jon.
Challenge 15: In this challenge, immunity would go to the player who solved jigsaw puzzles the fastest in as many tries as they liked. Tyrion was the most committed to victory and once again won safety from the vote.
Council 13: The coincidentally gender-divided alliances of Gilly, Dany, Catelyn and Tyrion, Eddard, Oberyn looked likely to define the battle lines, with each needing to guess where the enemy's shields would be played. Oberyn argued for his side to target Daenerys due to his connection with Gilly and desire to keep a bigger threat than himself around. Realizing that she was unlikely to win the shield war, Gilly reached out to Oberyn to make a different plan, targeting Catelyn, who she no longer trusted after learning of her double-dealing. Oberyn, paranoid that his allies would betray him at the next round, agreed to this new direction. Ultimately, Tyrion and Eddard voted for Daenerys, Catelyn tried to stick with the girls by voting for Eddard, and Gilly, Oberyn and Daenerys blindsided Catelyn with three votes.
Challenge 16: The five remaining players were asked a series of questions and awarded points for giving the most popular response. Oberyn, Tyrion and Gilly all tied for the highest score, but Tyrion came out on top of the tiebreaker and won immunity for the fifth time.
Council 14: Oberyn confessed his long-term hidden relationship with Gilly to Tyrion. Tyrion decided to try to use this information to persuade Daenerys to join his side and vote for Oberyn with each side hoping to convince Daenerys to vote with them. However, Daenerys exposed Tyrion's plan instead, and voted with Gilly and Oberyn again to send Eddard packing 3-2.
Challenge 17: The players raced to complete a logic puzzle with the fastest time. Oberyn was victorious, ending Tyrion's immunity streak.
Council 15: Oberyn stuck with Gilly and Daenerys for their loyalty during the previous vote, and Tyrion's game finally ran out of steam.
Challenge 18: The final three competed in a tribute challenge that featured elements of several past challenges. Gilly was able to put it all together and win immunity and the sole vote in the following Tribal Council.
Council 16: Gilly decided to face off against what she perceived as the more worthy opponent in Oberyn. Daenerys was eliminated.
Final Tribal Council: It was, arguably, a clash of the social against the strategic. While Gilly's impressive social game allowed her to amass power, Oberyn argued that she used it poorly and allowed her allies to be voted out. Oberyn played a smart and careful merge game throughout and always acted in his best interests. Gilly pointed out that she had been safer during the early part of the game, while Oberyn would have been eliminated if the Stormcrows had ever been to Tribal Council. Both finalists were essential to each other's ability to reach the end. In the end, the jury narrowly decided in favor of Gilly, 4-3, with Eddard on the fence about his deciding vote until the last moment.
