In the setup, all players are dealt five roles along with a modifier from the list of roles. The player will choose two roles for his alignment and two roles for his role, discarding one. The modifier he gets will be included with his final role. The moderator will then randomize his choices to create a random role from them. He will then give the player his role. This setup may also be played using the Greater/Greatest Idea Mafia style using the new role list. The setup must have at least one antitown role and a majority of town, it is strongly recommended that larger (12+ players) setups have at least three anti town roles. At the beginning of the game the players discarded roles are shown. The roles that were not chosen due to the random role function are not shown.

Modified Greatest Idea Mafia is a setup based off of Greatest Idea Mafia that attempts to create more awesome role combinations, while decreasing the odds of a reroll and adding some new roles and removing old ones to make a more balanced and flexible setup. This variant was created by The Great and Powerful Aronis with minimal assistance from his grateful and woefully unworthy apprentice, Prof Fridays.

In the setup, all players are dealt five roles along with a modifier from the modifier list. The player will choose two roles for his alignment and two roles for his power, discarding one role entirely. As in any Mafia game, this "power" could be nothing, e.g. a Vanilla Townie is Town-aligned with no special power and a Mafia Goon is Mafia-aligned with no special power.

Setup Specific Rules

  • You are stuck with any modifier you get, regardless of the effect it has. For example, if you are a Town Godfather, you will still be shown as 'Godfather' to Rolecops.
  • While the setup is designed to make any role and alignment be workable, in the event someone were to be unkillable for whatever reason, a reroll is required.
  • It is suggested that when playing with fewer then nine players, roles such as the Two-shot Kingmaker are made One-shot. This does not apply to abilities that one can use every night, such as a Cop.
  • Due to the swingyness of the setup, balance is not guaranteed.
  • All factions (Lovers, Neighbors, Mafia, and Werewolves) will be allowed to communicate during the night.
  • If there is only one Lover/Neighbor, the ability is null. If there are two or three, they are all paired together. If there are four or five, they will be paired in separate groups of two or three.
  • The Neighborizer is given a seperate discussion topic for each neighbor.
  • If the Cult Recruiter targets a Mafia/Werewolf, the recruit action will fail. Only third party and town can be recruited, excluding Serial Killers.
  • All players recruited into the cult will lose all active abilities they may have possessed.
  • Factional abilities cannot be lost when pairing the faction's alignment with another role. Mafia, Werewolves, and Serial Killers all have factional night kills. A player aligned as Cult at the beginning of the game still gets a Cult recruitment (functioning as a Cult Leader/Recruiter) along with whatever role their alignment is paired with (e.g. a Cult Tracker gets to both recruit and track at night).
  • Note that Werewolves, Cult Leaders, Serial Killers, Condemners, and Survivors are considered to have the "Vanilla" role when paired with other alignments, e.g. WereTownie, Town Leader, Serial Townie, Condemning Townie, Surviving Townie when paired with the "Town" alignment. Though cosmetically different, all are, for all intents and purposes, Vanilla Townies. Role Cops will return "Were," "Leader," "Serial," "Condemning," "Surviving" for each, respectively.
  • NOTE: Certain modifiers may or may not apply to factional abilities. Modifiers that DO NOT apply to factional abilities include: Day, Weak, Compulsive, Cowardly, Loyal, Loud, Reflexive, Double-Down. Modifiers that DO apply to factional abilities include: Ninja, Strongman, Bloodthirsty.
