What defines a mafia mutation as not being Mafia is not the degree of change but the kind.  cuban smoker's Logic Mafia is not a mutation, as the group dynamic is essentially the sameInner Circle, on the other hand, is a mutation, since the "town" and "mafia" no longer really exists, and players choose their own motives. The best way to describe it is to say that the primary question of the game changesIn Mafia the question is "Who are the good guys", whereas in Gay Mafia (or its simpler and less well-known version Spy Hunting Stand Down) the question is "How can we get people from the other side killed?" and in Inner Circle, the question is "Which alliances will leave me alive at the end?".
There is not necessarily anything wrong with Mafia Mutations, but they're not Mafia.  As a result, they are highly frowned upon on mafiascum.net when they are cast as Mafia gamesHowever, non-Mafia games are played in The Whole Sort of General Mish Mash with no stigma.

The distinction is a fuzzy one, and not well defined as yet.

A Mafia Mutation is a game that is not based on the definition of Mafia; that is, uninformed majority vs. informed minority. Examples of Mafia Mutations include:

 • Games in which there is no uninformed majority - for instance, one in which the majority (or even ALL) of players are scum
 • Games in which there is no informed minority - for instance, one in which there are no Mafia (also, the mod is a bastard)
 • Arguably, games in which there is only one scum player, as they are not particularly informed of anything
 • Games in which the uninformed majority and informed minority do not exist in a meaningful way (for instance, one in which winning via any alliances available is the best play)

There is not necessarily anything wrong with Mafia Mutations, but they're not Mafia. As a result, they are highly frowned upon on mafiascum.net when they are cast as Mafia games. However, non-Mafia games are played in The Whole Sort of General Mish Mash with no stigma.
