The original Newbie Games consisted of an Open Setup for seven players:
- 2 Mafia Goons
- 1 Sane Cop
- 1 Doctor
- 3 Townies.
Breaking Strategy
After 50-60 games, an unspoken Breaking Strategy became apparent, which even newbies began to figure out after another 10-20 games: the Cop claimed Day One and the hidden Doctor protected them while the Mafia hunted the Doctor (see Follow the Cop). While relatively balanced, it was no longer a good teaching tool, so other Newbie Setups have been used ever since.
