March is a really important month for MafiaScumDotNet. We turn a year older at the end of the month! That's right! Your favourite (and dare we say, the best) online community dedicated to the game of Mafia will soon be 19! It's wonderful that we are still going strong after all this time, and still retain some founding members of the site!
This is a very cool modifier which can be used in many varieties of ways. It could be as simple as revealing a role that exists, or doesn't, within a closed setup and can go as far as you like! If you followed Team Mafia this year, you may have noticed the game by Isis in which a scum role was informed of the entire setup!

What does all of this have to do with the chosen role, you ask? Bear with me.
When you include this, make sure to consider how it will effect the game and balance around it!

This role is unique in many ways. It is essentially an announcing visitor with some added flair. It leaves a piece of fruit for their target, but otherwise has no effects. Common uses are for balance in order to add night actions and therefore create havoc, making the job of investigative roles like the watcher harder. They also may be used to create a Named Townie which can be verified by the aforementioned investigative roles.
What does this have to do with birthdays? Well the "fruit" part of this role is often changed to fit the theme of a game. The role may be an artwork vendor, for instance. It could even be a starship vendor if that fit the theme! Well, this is birthday month, so let's say three cheers for the Cake Vendor!
Hip Hip Hurray!

Being birthday month, we figured a throwback would be fitting.
This exciting new game by Auro puts a cool spin on things with coloured roles.

The featured throwback was the first official Newbie Setup, or at least the first official variant upon it.
There are 3 coloured Mafia Goons, 3 coloured Town Merlins, and 5 VTs to fill out the playerlist. A;; Mafia know their roles and get a pool of 5 players, 3 of which are the Merlins and 2 of which are VTs. They have 2 wincons. Either they can win by achieving parity, as in a normal game, or they can win by guessing the colours of each Merlin properly. The catch is that only alignment, not role, are revealed at flip!

Newbie Games on MS began officially being run in late 2003, which was rather early in the site's history. The first setup to be used is the first of the four variations included in C9, which was created by Norinel, the List Moderator for the Newbie Queue at the time. It was created to solve the issue the original setup presented, in that the game was easily broken with Follow the Cop strategies. The invention of C9 made that move a gamble for the town, and one often not worth trying. It was a very early way of balancing a highly used setup.
To make things a little more interesting, the Merlins know the identities of both the other Merlins and the Mafia player who shares their colour. Of course, revealing any of this gives that secondary scum wincon a greater chance of being achieved.

It lasted for almost 3 years and over 420 Newbie games and solved a huge problem in an integral time for the early growth of the site. However, we have moved away from it. It was the first in a long line of Newbie Setups which has led to the current 2d3.
If you fancy yourself some fun times in the Mod PT then give it a go today!

Who knows where the future may take us!
Let's find out together!

About Mafia...

MainPage-IntroductionPic.png

"In the peaceful Sicilian village of Salem, a dark presence is about to make itself known. For years, the family based crime organization known as the Mafia has been establishing itself in the foundation of the community. Until now, the naive citizens have been unaware of the evil among them. Tonight, however, the Mafia makes its move. Tonight, someone will die, and until the Mafia has eliminated all opposition, the innocent will continue to die. Unless, of course, the Mafia is destroyed first..."

The above is a typical opening for the game called Mafia (Also known as "Werewolves of Miller's Hollow" or "Town of Salem"). The game can be played by an indeterminate group of people, each playing the role of either a murdering Mafia member or an innocent townsperson, along with a game moderator. At the beginning of the game, Night falls, and the Mafia family members become aware of each other (by communication from the moderator). They then choose a victim, and the moderator announces the death scene. When Day breaks, the town must try to weed out the evil by eliminating someone they suspect to be mafia.

The game of Mafia (in Meat World) is usually run with playing cards representing the possible roles in the game. The moderator secretly distributes the cards to the players, then has everyone put their head down/close their eyes. During the Night, the moderator "wakes up" the mafia, and they silently choose a victim. During the Day, everyone discusses, argues, swears, and eventually votes for someone to eliminate. The cycle repeats until the endgame.

MafiaScum, however, is devoted to the online version of the game. The history of mafiascum.net can be traced back to a game moderated by mith in August 2000 on the Grey Labyrinth, a puzzle website. Due to the success and growth of the game on the GL, mith started mafiascum.net as a dedicated forum in March 2002. Online Mafia has the potential for more strategy and subtlety because it removes most of the possibility for cheating and provides players with a chance to form suspicion based on logic and voting patterns instead of facial expression. It also has the potential for just as many (if not more) laughs, because the players can act however they like, no matter how shy they might be in real life.

Getting Started...

MafiaWiki Banner.jpg
To get yourself into a game the first thing you will have to do is go to our forum. You need to register an account with us in order to do almost anything, the link to register is in the top right corner of the index-page. Please be aware that to register an account you will need a valid e-mail address, as it is required to try and filter out a few of those darn Chinese bots.
All of our sign-up threads for games are found in the Queue subforum. To join a game, post something along the lines of "/in" in its signup thread. You will be assigned to a player list, and when the list is full, you will be instructed further on where to go and what to do. If you're new to the site, we don't recommend joining a lot of games at once in case you lose interest and flake out of all of them later on. If you decide that you want to abandon a sign-up list before you are assigned to a game, post "/out".

This month's featured setup is Chromavalon!

This exciting new game by Auro puts a cool spin on things with coloured roles.

To make things a little more interesting, the Merlins know the identities of both the other Merlins and the Mafia player who shares their colour. Of course, revealing any of this gives that secondary scum wincon a greater chance of being achieved.
