This is a MetaGame ploy that is strongly encouraged by many long-time players.  Confusion and lies are two of the best weapons of Mafia.  Thus, it is generally bad play for ProTown roles to lie.  In order to encourage *good* play, the policy should be:  Lynch anyone caught in a lie.  They are most likely Scum, and if they aren't, then lynching them might teach them that they should not lie.

Some lies that have been repeated that don't turn out well for the town:
Eliminate (Lim) All Liars is a longstanding mantra in the mafiascum.net community.  Quite simply, most Townies have no reason to lie about their actions, motivations, or roles.  Many newish Townies will attempt to lie in attempts to gambit, and fail miserably by hurting the Town in the processThese lies can be indistinguishable from deliberate scum gambits, and leaving them unpunished reinforces the behavior as a viable option for scum.
* Townie claiming to be a Doctor in an attempt to get the mafia to target them;
* Doc claiming to be plain Townie (you can skirt the issue and if you do the same when you are a plain townie, it won't be noticable);
* "I don't need doc protection" when you have no natural protectionIt generally just creates confusion for the pro-town roles and often will help the mafia find the doc.

And for the people who want to learn to play better as scum - don't get caught in a lie!
For example, Vanilla Townies who try to roleclaim Doctor in an attempt to draw the Mafia's Night-kill tend to cause the real Doctor to counterclaim them, thus definitely causing the Mafia to target them.  In addition to this, scum have been known to deliberately fakeclaim Doctor with the express purpose of drawing a counterclaim for this reason.  The elimination of the Vanilla Townie is then justified.

Generally, gambits are not successful.  If they were, they would probably be on this wiki or otherwise public knowledge.  Thus, rather than wind up on the receiving end of Eliminate All Liars, it is best not to try to gambit unless you fully understand the implications of your actions.  This comes primarily with experience.

NOTE: Masonity is exempt from this rule. He's far too awesome, and able to not only lie while town, but actually use a lie to ensure the town wins! Anyone quoting this as a case against him should be lynched themselves!
Eliminate All Liars is also why scum should not wantonly gamble with the Town's patience as well.

Eliminate (Lim) All Liars is a longstanding mantra in the mafiascum.net community. Quite simply, most Townies have no reason to lie about their actions, motivations, or roles. Many newish Townies will attempt to lie in attempts to gambit, and fail miserably by hurting the Town in the process. These lies can be indistinguishable from deliberate scum gambits, and leaving them unpunished reinforces the behavior as a viable option for scum.

Eliminate All Liars is also why scum should not wantonly gamble with the Town's patience as well.
