Middle Ground is an argument which attempts to show that the best option is the one which lies between two conflicting arguments.
In many real-life situations, taking the middle ground is a valid and possibly correct option. In Mafia games however, the concept of a "middle ground" is generally not valid. Consider this argument:
- Player A: I think that Player X is the Mafia Godfather.
- Player B: I think that Player X is a Townie.
- Player C: Therefore, Player X is a Mafia Goon. Die, scum!
The implication here is that "no-frills Mafioso" is a middle ground between "Vanilla Townie" and "Mafia power role". Of course, it should not take a genius to realize that a true middle ground would be between "town" and "scum", of which there is generally no alignment other than possibly Survivor.
In addition to this, it could be the case that a Godfather is known to exist and Player X got an Innocent result from a Cop. Here Player A and Player B's cases are reasonable, but Player C's is impossible.
